Elderly people possess a treasure trove of information and experience which they are generally very willing to share. However, in everyday residential home life there is little opportunity to disclose these stories or to archive them. This can make elderly people grow isolated and depressed.
The Storytable has been recognized by professionals and users alike as decreasing this social isolation. To confirm this positive effect, the Free University in Amsterdam, the Free University Hospital and the Institute for Elderly Research are scientifically and independently researching this effect in ten Dutch residential homes. Other scientific research has shown that reminiscence (the exercise of memory) has a positive effect on the quality of life for the elderly. The Storytable's use in Dutch care centers has shown that it has a clearly stimulating effect on reminiscence. The Trimbos Institute is currently performing research on this subject in order to assess the effect independently and scientifically. They will also develop a user guide for care centre professionals, so that their work with the Storytable can be optimized.
